Skarloey, a narrow gauge saddletank engine, is the oldest engine on the Skarloey Railway.

Skarloey is a very chipper, hard worker, who shares his duties with Rheneas. He is a proper engine who is dedicated to his narrow gauge line and always eager to help out when he's needed. [1]

Skarloey was built at Lowca Engineering Works in Fletcher, Jennings, and Co., Whitehaven in 1864 as a 0-4-0ST with no cab, which caused him to bounce a lot, made humself uneven and made him prone to rough riding. He was the first engine to arrive on the newly-developed Skarloey Railway in 1865. His young antics proved bothersome but he soon matured when he received his cab and trailing wheels for stabilization. A few more modifications were carried out at the workshops at Crovan's Gate until 1946 when Skarloey was finally worn out and retired from service. He later returned for a short while to service in 1953, and was sent away to the Browns Marshall works for a complete renewal and overhaul. Skarloey did not return to Sodor until 1958, but still proved to be a shy steamer. But luckily, after an overhaul done by the NWR Workshops at Crovan's Gate with an addition of a Kylchap steam pump in 1984, Skarloey has since proved to be a versatile worker for the Skarloey Railway.

He is a wise engine who knows everything there is to know about running a railway. He has great respect for coaches, passengers and his fellow engines, and often gives advice to the younger engines when it is needed.

Persona Edit

When he first arrived, Skarloey was pompous and arrogant, believing himself fit only to pull coaches. His attitude changed after being sheeted until he learnt sense, but after receiving a pair of trailing wheels and cab he reverted to his old tendencies. He boasted so much about it that Rheneas refused to talk to him until Skarloey apologised after Rheneas rescued him from a mudslide. Now, Skarloey is a wise old engine who doesn't stand for nonsense, but is still fair and friendly.

Skarloey is often proud of himself for being brave, but sometimes he can be a little pompous and arrogant. Since the 7th season, however, he has acted very young and immature.

Skarloey is based on the Talyllyn Railway's Talyllyn.
