Arthur is a maroon tank engine with "LMS" on his side. He is #83 on North Western Railway. When he arrived on the Island of Sodor, he was as excited to work for the Fat Controller as he was proud of his spotless record, which he soon lost after colliding with Duck's train. He was bought to shunt and pull freight, but then was transferred to the coastal run, on which he enjoys working.
Arthur is an LMS Ivatt Class 2 2-6-2 tank engine developed for the London Midland & Scottish Railway (hence the initials "LMS" on his tanks), but only really came properly into service with British Railways. These engines were equally capable of pulling goods and passenger trains, particularly on branch and secondary services. There are many engines of this class preserved all across England. They performed so well that they survived right to the end of steam on British Railways, and were one of the last classes to be sent for scrapping.
He first appeared in the seventh season episode "The Spotless Record", but had not appeared since the eight season.
